Back Pain and Gardening: Another Blog Post From From Ann Arbor Chiropractor, Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.
Many of my patients in Ann Arbor tell me working in the garden causes them back pain. All of sudden after couple hours of gardening the back pain begins. I let my patients know that there are different reasons gardening can cause back pain. Sometimes being out of shape makes one more susceptible to back pain or possibly even if you regularly work out you might still feel pain in areas of your back that you haven't exercised and stretched as part of your work out. Furthermore, injured areas of the back are primed for back pain.
In reality, there are lots of reasons one can get back pain from gardening. In order to reduce the chance of back pain from gardening you might want to abide by some of the following suggestions we give our patients at our chiropractic office in Ann Arbor.
Try to make sure your doing full body stretches at least three times a week.
Try to keep your weight down.
Make sure not to lift too much weight when gardening or pull weeds with too much force.
Work on your knees when gardening requires your hands to be close to the ground.
Make sure to bend your knees when shoveling and lifting things.
Be cognizant of your body and don't over exert those areas of your body that are prone to injury.
Water the dirt to so that the weed pulling requires less effort.
Take breaks and stretch.
Don't become over heated and drink plenty of water.
Finally, you should regularly go to a chiropractor to make sure the bones in your spine are properly aligned. Getting adjusted should make you less prone to low back pain, mid back pain or neck pain while gardening. At my office in Ann Arbor people often tell me that if only they had been getting regular chiropractic adjustments they wouldn't have hurt their back while gardening.
